Brutal Kidnapping and Murder in Hartbeespoort Prompts Major Police Operation and Community Action Calls

In a turn of events that shook the community in Hartbeespoort, North West Province, the local police have detained five individuals linked to the kidnapping and subsequent murder of 26-year-old Lesego Klaas Makaku. This distressing incident occurred following accusations against Makaku of stealing a cellphone in the Sangiro informal settlement.

On the night of December 31, 2024, Makaku and his girlfriend were visiting a local tavern where the alleged theft took place. The situation escalated quickly when Makaku was forcibly dragged outside and assaulted by a mob. He was later thrown into the nearby dam, a move that led to fatal consequences. Although his body was not immediately found, police divers initiated a thorough search. It was only through detailed enquiries and the cooperation of initially questioned suspects that the police were led to a bushy area near the settlement. Here, they discovered Makaku’s partially clothed body in the early stages of decomposition.

As the investigation unfolded, more suspects were apprehended, with one still evading capture. The accused, ranging in age from 19 to 40, are slated for a court appearance at the Brits Magistrate’s Court on charges of kidnapping and murder.

This case has sparked outrage and condemnation from community leaders and law enforcement officials alike. Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General Patrick Asaneng, expressed his vehement disapproval of the violence and called upon tavern owners and patrons to reinforce security measures and uphold lawful conduct within their premises. He stressed the transformation of some licensed venues into hotspots of criminal activities, including assaults and robberies, which often occurs in plain sight of other patrons and owners.
