South African Henk Lategan Triumphs in Dakar Rally Prologue in Saudi Arabia

In a remarkable start to the 2023 Dakar Rally, South African driver Henk Lategan clinched victory in the prologue stage of the cars category, setting a high standard for the weeks ahead. The event, now in its sixth year in Saudi Arabia, commenced in the small town of Bisha, covering a demanding 8000-kilometer journey through some of the most challenging terrains of the Arabian Peninsula.

Lategan, piloting a Toyota Hilux, showcased his driving prowess by finishing just a second ahead of Swedish competitor Mattias Ekstrom, with the five-time Dakar champion from Qatar, Nasser Al-Attiyah, securing third place. Although the prologue stage times do not directly influence the overall standings, they are crucial for strategic advantages, as the top 10 finishers earn the privilege to select their starting positions for the subsequent stages.

This year, the race has attracted a wide array of competitors, with 778 racers from 72 different countries participating in various categories including cars, bikes, quads, and trucks. The vibrant assembly embarked on their adventurous journey, navigating through an intricate network of stages that promises high-octane action and nerve-wracking strategy.

The motorbike category saw Australian Daniel Sanders leading the pack on his KTM, closely followed by Botswana's Ross Branch and young Spanish talent Edgar Canet. Defending champion Ricky Brabec from the United States also made a strong start by finishing fourth.

The competition layout includes a staggering twelve stages, culminating on January 17th in Shubaytah near the UAE border. This year's route encompasses the daunting 48-hour marathon stage in the "Empty Quarter" - a sprawling expanse of towering sand dunes providing a surreal backdrop but a formidable challenge to the racers.

The Dakar Rally, although originally held from Paris to Dakar, Senegal, hasn't concluded in its namesake city since 2007 due to security concerns. After a stint in South America, Saudi Arabia has been its venue since 2020 as part of the kingdom's broader initiative to redefine its image and diversify its economy through hosting major global sporting events.
