In a tragic incident in Gqeberha, the South African Police Service (SAPS) is currently dealing with the loss of one of their own. On the evening of 31 December 2024, a 29-year-old police constable stationed at Gelvandale SAPS was fatally shot during a routine patrol that turned deadly. This unfortunate event took place in the Helenvale area of Kobus Road.
The incident occurred approximately at 5:35 PM when two police officers, including the deceased, were conducting patrols and were sidelined due to a vehicle breakdown. During their attempt to address the vehicle issue, with the aid of three community members, an unexpected shot rang out. Upon investigation, it was discovered that the constable had suffered a fatal headshot. He was promptly rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
In the aftermath of the shooting, it was noted that the deceased officer's service firearm was missing, raising concerns about the motive and the circumstances under which the attack was carried out. The case has since been escalated to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), commonly known as the Hawks, to spearhead further inquiries and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, the Provincial Commissioner, has expressed profound sorrow over the loss of the young constable and vehemently condemned this violent act carried out against a police member actively engaged in community protection. She and her management team are deeply distressed by this loss and are imploring the public to come forward with any information that might lead to the resolution of this case and the arrest of those responsible.
This incident casts a spotlight on the risks that law enforcement officers face daily while performing their duties. The incident not only robs the community of a dedicated public servant but also instills fear and distress amongst fellow officers.
SAPS has announced that they will be working closely with the community to gather intelligence and encourage anyone with knowledge about the incident to reach out, promising confidentiality and protection for those who come forward.
The police force’s plea for public help underscores the critical role community cooperation plays in law enforcement and safety. This partnership is pivotal in combating crime and ensuring the culprits are caught, serving as a deterrent for future crimes against public servants.
Lieutenant General Mene reiterates her call for increased public vigilance and cooperation, highlighting how integral these elements are in maintaining public safety and preventing such tragedies. The SAPS is committed to the continued fight against crime in all its manifestations, urging the community to remain supportive and engaged.
Calls for justice for the slain officer are growing louder, with SAPS and the community hoping for a swift resolution to this appalling act of violence against a young officer dedicated to serving and protecting his community.
