Massive Seizure of Counterfeit Goods Valued Over R200 Million in Durban

In a significant operation on the 19th of December 2024, an array of counterfeit goods worth approximately R212 million was confiscated at a container depot in Durban. This operation underscores a growing concern around the illegal importation and distribution of counterfeit merchandise.

The operation was a collaborative effort involving members from the Hawks' Durban Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit, border police, and respective brand owners. Initial suspicions arose in September 2024 when border police detained five shipping containers for inspection. Upon closer examination, facilitated by brand attorneys, it was confirmed that the contents bore counterfeit versions of products from well-known brands such as Nike, Adidas, Polo, Vans, and Vicks.

These products, ostensibly originating from China, were en route to Johannesburg via Durban Harbour. The timely intervention by the Hawks thwarted their distribution into the South African market. The bust highlights not only the sophisticated methods employed by counterfeit traders but also the proactive steps being taken by South African authorities to curb such activities.

Major General (Dr) Lesetja Senona, the KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, has hailed the achievement as a testament to the effectiveness and vigilance of his team. Although no arrests have been made in connection with the seizure to date, the investigation continues, with authorities keen on dismantling networks involved in the broader illicit trade.
