Tensions Rise in the Baltic: Underwater Cable Sabotage and Detention of Russian Tanker

In a concerning development reported by Estonia's ERR, three underwater communication cables connecting Finland and Estonia have been mysteriously severed. Owned by Elisa Eesti AS and CITIC Telecom CPC, these vital communication lines traversed the seabed of the Gulf of Finland. Despite the damages, the companies have assured users of uninterrupted service, thanks to backup cables.

Simultaneously, the Finnish police have escalated their investigation into the possibility of intentional sabotage involving the Russian oil tanker, Eagle S. This vessel, reportedly part of Moscow's so-called shadow fleet, was apprehended while navigating Finnish territorial waters. The shadow fleet is allegedly used to covertly transport the Russian commodity under the radar of international sanctions and price caps instituted by the G7, the EU, and Australia.

Eagle S's suspicious activity was recorded near the recently disrupted EstLink 2 power cable, another critical infrastructural connection between Finland and Estonia. According to The Insider, data from MarineTraffic illustrated the tanker reducing speed dramatically near the cable's location and performing questionable maneuvers. This unusual behavior prompted the Finnish border guard to escort the tanker to shore for a thorough investigation.

The EstLink cable incident on December 25 is part of an alarming trend observed in the region. Earlier in December, a communication cable in the Baltic Sea, connecting Sweden and Finland, was found severed. More unsettling still, on November 18, additional underwater cables linking Finland to Germany and Sweden to Lithuania also suffered damages under mysterious circumstances. The presence of the Chinese ship Yi Peng 3, piloted by a Russian national near the sites, further fuels the suspicion of deliberate acts potentially motivated by geopolitical strife.

These incidents cast a shadow over the security of underwater infrastructure in an area of increasing military and security significance. The Baltic Sea region has been a theater for escalating tensions amid broader geopolitical confrontations. Russian movements, in particular, have drawn intense scrutiny and concern from European nations and NATO entities worried about the potential for covert operations aimed at destabilizing European security and unity.
