In a shocking turn of events that unfolded in the small town of Verena, Mpumalanga, one man was killed and another was severely injured after they were allegedly attacked by a mob on suspicions of stock theft. This violent incident occurred on the eve of December 24, 2024, and has sparked a significant police investigation.
The Verena police reported that the victims were apprehended by a group of locals after they were found in possession of livestock, which included 26 cattle, six goats, and a donkey, believed to be stolen from a nearby farm. Earlier that day, a shepherd managing the livestock had been assaulted and robbed, intensifying the community’s grievances and subsequent actions.
As per police findings, the suspects attempted to escape in two bakkies with trailers but were immobilized when their vehicles became stuck in the mud. This situation facilitated their capture by the locals, who in their fury, also set the vehicles on fire. The confrontation escalated quickly resulting in fatal consequences for one of the men involved, while the other was rescued by police and emergency services and is currently hospitalized under police watch.
This incident is a grim reminder of the prevailing challenges of stock theft in rural communities, a recurring issue that significantly impacts the livelihood of farmers. The SAPS has a dedicated Stock Theft Unit, but despite these efforts, the community's patience seems to be wearing thin, leading to such drastic measures as witnessed in Verena.
Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has openly condemned the act of vigilantism and stressed the critical need for lawful handling of suspects. Major General Mkhwanazi also highlighted the necessity for increased cooperation between local communities and law enforcement agencies to effectively tackle crimes such as stock theft, thereby preventing such unfortunate events.
The law enforcement appeals to the public to not partake in unlawful acts but rather to report suspicious activities. Major General Mkhwanazi strongly advises against purchasing suspected stolen goods, emphasizing that community cooperation is essential for maintaining law and order and preventing future tragedies.
This case is under thorough investigation, and further updates are expected as new information becomes available. The community and police are urged to find a balanced approach to addressing crime, one that respects legal boundaries and protects all citizens' rights.
