In a shocking display of violence, a 35-year-old resident from Parkgate, KZN, was severely injured after being repeatedly struck by a white Toyota Corolla in what appears to have been an unprovoked attack. The horrifying incident took place in Everest Heights, KZN, on the afternoon of December 24, 2024.
According to the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), they received an emergency call at 16:07 from concerned residents of Himalaya Drive who witnessed a man, driving a Toyota Corolla, deliberately attempting to run over the victim. Upon arrival, RUSA officers and paramedics discovered the injured man on the pavement, suffering from a broken leg and multiple bodily injuries.
Eyewitnesses noted that the victim was visiting a friend and his mother in the area when the suspect, a neighbor erroneously accusing him of vagrancy and sleeping in the vicinity, initiated the attack. Despite the victim's clarifications of not being homeless, the assailant escalated the situation to physical violence.
The suspect managed to flee the scene before the first responders arrived. Officials later identified the attacker as someone who had previously been detained by RUSA in a separate incident, where he had tied an on-duty eThekwini Municipal worker to a tree. This history paints a disturbing picture of the suspect's potential for repeat offenses and raises concerns about community safety.
Currently, Reaction Officers are conducting a search to locate and apprehend the fugitive. The community is on high alert, and local authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the suspect to come forward to assist in the investigation and ensure swift justice.
This incident has sparked a broader discussion on neighborhood safety and the measures needed to protect residents from similar random acts of violence. It also underscores the critical role of community vigilance and rapid response teams in mitigating and responding to emergencies.
