In a commendable display of efficiency and technological adeptness, Sea Border Police unit members in the Garden Route District successfully apprehended a suspect and recovered stolen property valued at R29,300. This operation is part of the broader Safer Festive Season initiative aimed at bolstering security during the holiday period.
Late night on Thursday, 19 December 2024, the Groot Brakrivier police were alerted to a burglary involving the theft of a cell phone and cash. Crucial information obtained at the scene was promptly shared with the Sea Border police and local neighborhood watch groups. This coordinated response enabled the authorities to deploy drone technology effectively, which led to the quick location and arrest of the suspect hiding in the vicinity.
Upon apprehension, a search of the suspect, reportedly a Mozambican national, led to the recovery of the stolen items. The police seized these goods and charged the suspect with housebreaking and theft.
In a separate but equally significant operation on the same day, Knysna police, following up on a tip from a sexual assault victim, conducted a search on a nearby farm in Rheenendal. The search resulted in the discovery of a rifle with a silencer and various calibers of ammunition. A 70-year-old man was arrested at the scene, facing charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, in addition to a charge of sexual assault.
Both suspects from these incidents are scheduled to appear in court to face their respective charges. These successful operations underscore the importance and effectiveness of collaboration between the community and police forces. Further, the use of advanced technology like drones illustrates the evolving approach of law enforcement agencies to combat crime and ensure community safety. The continued deployment of diverse police resources throughout the festive period highlights the commitment to maintaining public safety and deterring criminal activities.
