Eastern Cape Police Officer Arrested for Fraud and Livestock Theft

In a striking case of law enforcement malfeasance, an Eastern Cape police official has been arrested on charges of fraud and theft. The 46-year-old sergeant, attached to the Stock Theft Unit in Alice, was apprehended by the Hawk's Serious Corruption Investigation unit in East London on 18 December 2024.

The arrest stems from a June 2021 incident where a complainant, transporting four cattle to East London, was stopped and searched by police. The sergeant in question falsely claimed the livestock was reported stolen. Even after the complainant provided proof of legal ownership, he was unlawfully arrested, and his cattle were seized and placed in a municipal livestock pound.

The saga continued even after the charges against the complainant were dropped. Efforts to reclaim his cattle were met with misinformation and empty promises by the accused. The turning point came when investigative efforts by the Hawks revealed a troubling chain of events: records indicated that the sergeant had booked the cattle into the Enoch Mgijima Municipality pound, and the livestock were suspiciously transferred the following day to an acquaintance of the suspect.

This arrest underscores a worrying pattern of corruption within sectors of the South African police, particularly troubling within units entrusted with curbing livestock theft—a significant issue in rural communities. The officer is slated for a court appearance at the Queenstown Magistrate's Court on 19 December 2024, an event that is anticipated to reveal deeper layers of this corruption case.

Acting Provincial Head of the Hawks, Brigadier Fernando Luis, commended the East London SCI team for their diligent investigation leading to the arrest, signaling a strong stance against corruption within the police force.
