High-Profile Arrest in Cape Town: Suspect Detained for the Murder of Police Officer

The collaboration between the Hawks' National Priority Violent Crime Investigation (NPVC), the Cape Town Flying Squad, and the K9 Unit has led to the arrest of 34-year-old Sive Sigobo on 16 December 2024, over allegations of murdering a police officer in 2022. This comes after an extensive search backed by a legally issued warrant for his arrest.

The case involves the fatal shooting of Warrant-Officer Mphakathi in Philippi, a township near Cape Town, during a confrontation in June 2022 which resulted in the officer's service pistol being stolen. In the immediate aftermath, two individuals, Sive Sigobo and Xolisa Lufutha, were implicated in the crime. They faced legal proceedings where bail was denied, however, a snag in the administration process caused the case to be temporarily dismissed by the Cape Town High Court, leading to their release.

Despite the earlier administrative hiccup, the pursuit of justice resumed. Warrants for re-arrest were issued against both accused. Lufutha was apprehended in May 2024 and subsequently released on bail pending a trial set for 11 February 2025 at the Khayelitsha Priority Court.

Sigobo’s whereabouts remained unknown until recently when new information emerged about his location. This led to his arrest and he is expected to face the charges at the Athlone Magistrate's Court on 17 December 2024.

The arrest marks a significant triumph for the South African police and justice system demonstrating their dedication to solving cases involving violence against law enforcement officers.
