Swift Police Response in Welkom Leads to Recovery of Hijacked Vehicle and Arrest of Four Suspects

In a remarkable display of coordinated law enforcement, the Welkom and Bloemfontein police successfully thwarted a violent hijacking incident, resulting in the recovery of a stolen vehicle and the arrest of four suspects. This swift action follows the discovery of a 35-year-old victim with multiple stab wounds on the morning of December 15, 2024, lying critically injured between Bronville and Thabong.

Upon receiving the distressing tip-off around 07:30, the Welkom Flying Squad immediately rushed to the scene to assist the injured individual, who was quickly transported to a local hospital in a critical state. The initial investigations by the police pointed to a dire scenario where the victim, while driving a white VW kombi, became the target of a heinous hijacking.

The criminals were tracing their route to Bloemfontein when the Bloemfontein Flying Squad, alongside the Anti-Gang unit and Navalsig Police, were alerted and given a lookout for the hijacked vehicle. By approximately 09:10, law enforcement spotted and intercepted the vehicle in the Navalsig area, piloted by one of the suspects.

The arrest scene was tense as one suspect attempted to flee by foot upon noticing the police. A daring chase ensued, led by a quick-footed police officer, which resulted in the timely apprehension of the suspect. The vehicle's three other occupants—three females aged between 20 and 35—were also arrested without further incidents.

A search of the vehicle revealed the victim's personal firearm and ammunition ingeniously hidden beneath the driver's seat, pointing to the dangerous intentions of the assailants. The arrested suspects, comprising three women and one man, now face charges of hijacking, attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, and possession of a hijacked vehicle.

Their apprehension not only highlights the perilous nature of their crime but also underscores the effectiveness of the multi-disciplinary approach employed by South African police forces in responding to criminal activities. These suspects are expected to soon make their preliminary court appearances in both the Welkom and Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Courts, where the judiciary will begin its process of addressing this grievous incident.
