A significant arrest was made in Hazyview, Mpumalanga, as part of the South African Police Service's (SAPS) Operation Safer Festive Season. A 25-year-old male suspect was apprehended during a routine stop and search operation conducted by the Public Order Policing (POP) members. The operation led to the discovery of a high-calibre R5 rifle, over 70 live rounds of ammunition, two magazines, and damaged banknotes in the suspect’s vehicle.
The arrest occurred when POP officers decided to inspect the suspect's vehicle, which led to the uncovering of the rifle hidden on the back seat. Initial investigations suggest the vehicle might have been used in criminal activities, supported by the presence of inauthentic registration plates.
The suspect, currently on bail from prior charges including possession of an unlicensed firearm and house robbery, faces new charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. Given the severity of the findings and his criminal history, additional charges could be levied as the police delve deeper into their investigation.
The efforts by SAPS come as part of Operation Safer Festive Season, aimed specifically at ramping up security measures during the holiday period, a time which typically sees a spike in criminal activities. Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, has lauded the force for their exemplary work in tackling crime and ensuring community safety during this critical period.
The suspect is scheduled to appear at the White River Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, December 17, 2024. As the community and law enforcement wait for the court proceedings, the SAPS has reiterated its commitment to maintaining high-alert operations and ensuring a safer festive season for all residents.
