Malema Clarifies Controversial Tea Party with Zuma: A Strategic Meeting to Prevent National Crisis

In a surprising revelation, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema defended the motives behind his controversial meeting with former South African President Jacob Zuma, asserting that the event, famously dubbed the "tea party," was grossly misconstrued in public discourse. The meeting, which took place at Zuma's Nkandla residence in February 2021, was initially perceived by many as a clandestine political alignment. However, speaking at the EFF's National People’s Assembly, Malema framed the meet-up as a preemptive strike against potential national upheaval.

Malema detailed how the judiciary’s decision to arrest Zuma over his refusal to appear at the state capture commission of inquiry, headed by Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, threatened to destabilize the country. Predicting the possible bloodshed that could follow Zuma's detention, the EFF leadership felt compelled to intervene, hoping to persuade the former president towards compliance to avert crisis.

"This was necessary because at the time, we foresaw the potential violence, which would have unfolded in Zuma's name, and we were certain it was avoidable," Malema explained. Despite their efforts, Malema noted, Zuma did not heed their advice, which eventually led to his arrest and subsequent widespread unrest in July 2021, resulting in tragic fatalities.
