In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the North West Police have recently apprehended three individuals and seized dagga worth thousands of rands. This operation, which took place on Monday, 09 December 2024, marks a substantial victory in the ongoing battle against illegal drug distribution in South Africa.
The operation was the culmination of efforts that began in October 2024 when police in Potchefstroom set up a special team tasked with targeting drug traffickers operating between Gauteng and North West Provinces. This initiative led to the strategic, intelligence-led arrests of the suspects in both Potchefstroom and Bloemhof.
In Potchefstroom, a Toyota Hilux with two occupants was intercepted and found to be transporting approximately 440 kilograms of dagga. The vehicle's occupants, identified as Monica Mnyakeni (60) and Gerald Mnyakeni (25), were placed under arrest. They were later presented in the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court and are currently being held until further court proceedings.
Simultaneously, another Toyota Hilux was stopped along the N12 road in Bloemhof. This vehicle, driven by Khumbo Mahlalela (24), was found carrying 259 kilograms of dagga. Mahlalela was taken into custody and has since appeared in court, with further legal action pending.
Both vehicles, believed to be en route to Kimberley in the Northern Cape Province, were confiscated by the police as they were used as instruments in the commission of these drug trafficking crimes. This seizure not only represents a direct disruption to the drug trafficking pipeline but also serves as a warning to others involved in similar activities.
Furthermore, the police are actively pursuing a fourth individual linked to this network, who attempted to evade capture by bribing a police officer. This suspect remains at large, and efforts to secure their apprehension are ongoing.
Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, the Police Provincial Commissioner, has praised the dedication and efficiency of all officers and role players involved in the operation. Their coordinated efforts not only led to these arrests but also to the substantial seizure of illegal substances, striking a blow against the regional drug trade.
The North West police reaffirm their commitment to combating drug trafficking and underline the importance of intelligence-led operations in tackling such pervasive crimes. This recent operation underscores the ongoing challenges and the necessary resolve required to combat drug trafficking effectively.
