Major Dagga Haul Seized at South African Border Amid Festive Season Crackdown

In a significant narcotics bust on the night of December 12, 2024, law enforcement officers in Nelspruit, South Africa, intercepted a substantial quantity of dagga, valued at approximately R102,000, during a routine operation along the N2 road near the Mahamba border area adjacent to the Kingdom of Eswatini.

This successful operation is part of the broader "Operation Safer Festive," a strategic initiative by South African Police Services (SAPS) aimed at intensifying patrols and checks during the holiday season when illicit activities tend to spike. The suspect, a 29-year-old male, was caught after police officers observed a suspicious handover involving the individual climbing aboard a truck parked near the border.

Upon conducting a thorough search of the vehicle, authorities discovered four large bags of compressed dagga cleverly concealed within the truck's compartments. Each bag was wrapped in sello tapes and hidden inside black refuse bags, evidencing a methodical attempt to smuggle narcotics into the country. The suspicion is that this consignment was destined for KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) province.

Following his arrest, the suspect was taken into police custody, and he is anticipated to answer multiple charges at the Mkhondo Magistrate's Court. These include dealings related to the distribution and sale of illegal substances as well as violations of the Immigration Act of South Africa, with further charges potentially being added as the investigation progresses.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi praised the officers' diligence and reasserted the police’s commitment to reducing the impact of cross-border crime. He underscored the continuous efforts of the SAPS in ensuring the safety and security of the nation during the festive season and beyond.
