Alleged Election Interference in Moldova: Roman Abramovich and Ilan Shor Under Scrutiny

The recent revelations from the Moldovan Security and Intelligence Service (SIS) have ignited international concern, laying out a detailed account of how Roman Abramovich allegedly assisted in orchestrating election interference in Moldova. This interference reportedly targeted both the presidential elections held in October and a critical referendum on European Union integration.

According to the SIS, an operational center in Moscow, allegedly supported by Russian authorities, spearheaded initiatives to sway the electoral outcomes in Moldova. The center's activities, believed to be led by the Moldovan fugitive businessman Ilan Shor, included sophisticated strategies like vote-buying, cyber-attacks on election infrastructure, and extensive disinformation campaigns leveraging social media platforms such as Telegram, TikTok, and YouTube.

The link between Shor and Abramovich was seemingly confirmed during a secret meet-up in France, where Abramovich reportedly offered support to Shor. Subsequently, Rola Brentlin, identified as Abramovich's personal assistant and a prior executive at Chelsea Football Club, is claimed to have provided legal aid to Shor’s Victory political bloc, formed explicitly for the elections.
