Strategic Sting: Hawks Nab Cocaine Dealer in Durban

In a recent clampdown on illegal narcotics, the Hawks’ Durban Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit executed a meticulously planned sting operation that culminated on Wednesday, 11 December 2024, with the arrest of a 30-year-old suspect. This individual is alleged to have been involved in the trade of cocaine, a persistent issue in the bustling port city of Durban, South Africa.

The operation, which started discreetly on 19 November 2024, saw undercover agents from the Special Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) team successfully carry out an initial controlled drug purchase from the suspect. They procured approximately 20 grams of cocaine powder, with an estimated street value of R5,000. This first encounter provided the necessary evidence and basis for the Hawks to secure authorization under Section 252A of the Criminal Procedure Act, which facilitated a subsequent buy and bust operation aimed at further implicating and capturing the suspect.

This follow-up operation was strategically timed and executed on Old North Coast Road, a known hotspot in Durban for such illicit transactions. During this phase, the suspect was apprehended while in possession of another 20 grams of cocaine, similarly valued at R5,000. The quick and effective actions of the Hawks led to the immediate arrest and seizure of the cocaine, collectively valued at R10,000. This not only disabled an active node in the local drug distribution network but also sent a clear message about the intensity of the law enforcement against drug trafficking.

The suspect was charged with two counts of dealing in drugs and was scheduled to appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court on 12 December 2024. The prompt legal proceedings reflect the seriousness with which such crimes are being addressed in the region.
