A meticulously orchestrated operation by the Mopani District Tracking Team, together with the Tzaneen Crime Intelligence, resulted in the arrest of a suspect linked to a series of hitchhiker robberies in Polokwane, South Africa. The suspect was found in possession of stolen goods and an unlicensed firearm during a strategic interception that took place on December 10, 2024.

The operation was instigated following reports of two separate incidents involving a white Toyota Avanza, where hitchhikers were robbed at gunpoint. The first incident reported occurred on June 13, 2024, near the Mahlakung Mall in the Sekororo area along the D21 road. A 25-year-old male hitchhiker was robbed by a motorist driving the aforementioned vehicle. A similar instance was reported by a 26-year-old female on December 8, 2024, in the Maake policing area, also along the D21 road.

The escalation of the search on December 10 led the authorities to Botshwana Village, where the suspect’s vehicle was spotted and subsequently stopped. A thorough search of the vehicle unearthed multiple personal items including smart cellphones, new clothing, female handbags, bank cards, identity documents, and driver's licenses, presumed stolen from various victims. Furthermore, a 9mm black firearm wrapped in socks with three rounds of ammunition, alongside two additional 7.65 live rounds found in the suspect’s pocket, were confiscated.

The 36-year-old suspect was arrested on multiple charges, including possession of an unlicensed firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and possession of suspected stolen property. The prompt and effective maneuvers of the crime intelligence unit resulted in the seizure of the Toyota Avanza for further forensic investigation. Following his arrest, the suspect is due for a court appearance in the local magistrate court to face these charges.

This successful operation has not only nabbed a suspect but demonstrated a significant resolve of local law enforcement in tackling crime affecting vulnerable communities. The local police force and involved crime intelligence officers have been highly commended for their diligent efforts. The community, however, is strongly advised against hitchhiking and encouraged to use safer transport methods such as taxi services.

Law enforcement remains vigilant and continues to investigate the incidents to possibly link the suspect to more unsolved cases in the region.
