OpenAI, the pioneering artificial intelligence research lab known for its groundbreaking creation, ChatGPT, has launched yet another innovative product: Sora, an AI that produces realistic videos from text prompts. This reveal comes nearly ten months after an initial sneak peek at the technology. Starting Monday, Sora will be accessible to ChatGPT's paid subscribers in the U.S. and other selected markets.

Sora, designed to generate videos up to 20 seconds, is expected to transform content creation by providing efficient, cost-effective alternatives to traditional video production. This new tool lets users produce multiple variations of video clips, potentially disrupting numerous roles in the filmmaking industry. Despite the initial hype, early reviews by Bloomberg highlighted some areas for improvement, such as rendering issues and excessive computational demands.

Competing in a market with burgeoning AI video startups such as Pika, Haiper, and Runway, OpenAI has strategically engaged with film studios and media moguls to refine Sora. In addition, they have provided trial access to influential artists and cinema figures, aiming to integrate AI seamlessly into professional video production. Runway, one of its competitors, has even ventured into partnerships to exploit AI in enhancing studio-quality films.

Despite its potential, Sora remains somewhat restricted. Users subscribed to ChatGPT Plus for $20 per month are limited to creating 50 videos, while those on the ChatGPT Pro plan, costing $200 monthly, are offered 500 faster-produced videos or unlimited slower productions. Currently, Sora is not available in most European regions due to stringent tech regulations.

One notable feature of Sora is the 'Storyboard' function, which allows users to script and control the sequence of events within the video, enhancing the directorial influence over AI-generated content. Additionally, Sora can extend existing video clips and provides a platform to explore videos created by other users, making it a versatile tool for various content creation needs.

With the introduction of Sora, OpenAI not only extends its repertoire of AI services but also continues to influence the ongoing evolution of digital media production. As part of a broader initiative, OpenAI has promised 12 days of product-launch events, indicating their commitment to enhancing and expanding the capabilities of AI technologies in everyday applications.
