Cape Town Pub Wins R1.25 Million in Defamation Case After False Racism Accusations

In a landmark ruling, the Western Cape High Court has awarded R1.25 million in damages to Latari House, the company behind Hank’s Olde Irish Pub, situated on the vibrant Bree Street in Cape Town. This decision came after Christopher Michael Logan made false accusations of racism against the pub’s co-owner, John Papadakis, which resulted in significant personal and professional harm.

The case stemmed from an incident in December 2022, wherein Logan claimed his friend, Thabiso Danca, was denied entry to the pub based on his race. Logan's allegations quickly gained traction when he posted a video on social media, which went viral. This sparked extensive public backlash, including several protests led by activists and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), culminating in the temporary shutdown of the business.

Despite Logan's inflammatory claims, an investigation later cleared the Papadakis brothers, Viron and John, of any racist practices at their establishment. The National Prosecuting Authority found no evidence supporting the allegations, deciding against pursuing any charges. However, the damage to Hank’s Olde Irish Pub’s reputation and the owners’ personal integrity was already done.

According to court documents, the video not only caused emotional distress but also led to financial setbacks including lost business partnerships and revenue during the periods of forced closure.
