An intensive manhunt has been initiated by the Swartruggens police following the daring escape of three detainees from the local police station's holding cells last Sunday, December 8, 2024. The escape, involving a calculated break through the roof of the detention facility, prompted an immediate law enforcement response.
Authorities were able to apprehend one of the initial four escapees, a 23-year-old male, while he was attempting to hitchhike along the N4 road near Swartruggens plaza. He is now facing charges for escaping lawful custody and is scheduled for a court appearance at the Swartruggens Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, December 11, 2024.
The three men still at large are:
1. Mpho Vincent Madito, 29, previously detained in connection with four reported rape incidents in Swartruggens and Makgobistad.
2. Thapelo Mogwele Molebatsi, 25, who was in custody related to theft charges in Swartruggens.
3. Johannes Mfaladi, 28, held for assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH).
Given their alleged crimes, these individuals are considered highly dangerous. Local authorities, led by Captain Peterson Monageng, are conducting a thorough investigation to both trace the fugitives and determine the circumstances that facilitated their escape.
The police have made a public appeal, urging anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of these individuals to come forward. Community members can contact the nearest police station or directly reach out to Captain Monageng at 082 569 5868.
This incident has raised concerns about security measures at local detention facilities, prompting discussions about potential improvements to prevent future escapes. The effectiveness of these measures will likely be scrutinized in light of this breakout.
As the search continues, the community and local authorities remain on high alert. The police have reassured the public that all efforts are being made to recapture the escapees and have increased patrols in the area. The safety and quick resolution to this disturbing event are paramount.
