The city of New York is on high alert as a massive search unfolds for the suspect allegedly responsible for the murder of UnitedHealth executive Brian Thompson. The incident, which took place early Wednesday morning, has resulted in heightened police activity and a combined $60,000 reward for any information leading to the perpetrator’s arrest.

Brian Thompson, 50, who was appointed as the CEO of UnitedHealth's insurance unit in April 2021, was tragically shot from behind around 6:45 a.m. ET on Wednesday. According to NYPD reports, the attack was executed by a masked gunman who had been lying in wait for Thompson. This shocking incident occurred right before Thompson was scheduled to attend UnitedHealth's annual investor conference at the Hilton hotel on Sixth Avenue.

The assailant, after committing the heinous act, fled the scene on foot donned in a hooded jacket and balaclava, carrying a gray backpack. He was last seen mounting an electric bike and heading into Central Park. In a strategic move to keep the suspect guessing, NYC Mayor Eric Adams stated that the police would refrain from publicly naming the suspected individual at this stage.

In a recent update provided by the authorities, there have been some breakthroughs. A backpack matching the description of the one carried by the suspect was found near a playground in Central Park. The contents of the bag included a jacket and Monopoly money; however, the firearm used in the murder is still missing. As part of the ongoing search, NYPD divers were directed to comb through a pond in Central Park with hopes of finding the weapon.

Police have managed to collect substantial evidence which includes fingerprints, DNA from the scene, and video footage tracking the suspect’s movements across the city. The NYPD believes that the suspect might have fled New York City, as he was last seen entering the Port Authority Bus Terminal and possibly boarding an interstate bus.

The New York police and the FBI combined have offered a $60,000 reward for information that can lead to the capture of the shooter. The circumstances surrounding the shooting suggest that it was a targeted and planned attack, according to police assessments. Surveillance footage indicated the shooter targeted Thompson specifically, ignoring other passersby and waiting for the right moment to strike from behind.

Thompson's sudden and brutal death has shocked both the community and the corporate world. As CEO of America’s largest health insurer, he played a pivotal role in managing healthcare benefits for millions. The tragedy of his loss extends beyond his corporate contributions, remembered also as a devoted husband and father of two.

As the investigation continues, authorities are determined to uncover the motive behind this grave attack and to bring the suspect to justice, ensuring the safety and security of the community.
