In a detailed operation that started on December 3, 2024, and concluded on the evening of December 6, 2024, relentless efforts finally paid off when a total of 153 individuals, alleged to have been engaged in illegal mining, were safely brought to the surface from the depths of the abandoned South Mine in Sabie, Mpumalanga.

The operation, dubbed a success by the authorities, was notably complex due to the precarious conditions of the disused mining site. The task force, comprising personnel from various sectors including mining companies, security services, governmental departments like the SAPS, Department of Home Affairs, Department of Health (Emergency Medical Services), and the South African National Defence Force, showcased an exemplary model of inter-agency cooperation.

During the span of the rescue, three deceased were also recovered on December 4, 2024. However, there were no injuries reported among the rescued miners and the team involved in the operation, marking it as a meticulously conducted exercise under potentially dangerous circumstances.

Highlighting the rescue were the visits by high-level officials including the National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, and accompanied dignitaries. Their presence underscored the significance of the operation and governmental commitment to addressing the scourge of illegal mining that plagues the region.

Among those rescued, a considerable number were identified as foreign nationals from neighboring countries such as Lesotho, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique, reflecting the transnational nature of illegal mining activities. South African nationals were also found among the group, pointing towards a diverse demographic involved in these underground activities.

The aftermath of the operation has shifted towards legal and investigatory procedures. Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi expressed gratitude towards the dedication and professionalism displayed by every team member and stressed the beginning of a rigorous investigation aimed at dismantling the networks behind these illegal mining operations. As part of the ongoing measures, Operation Vala Umgodi will persist, focusing on eliminating illegal mining in Mpumalanga.

This operation not only saved lives but also highlighted the broader challenges concerning illegal mining in South Africa. It raises significant questions on safety, legal enforcement, and the socio-economic conditions that drive individuals towards such perilous endeavors.
