In a striking example of community and police collaboration, two brothers were arrested in Mahikeng, under charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. This incident occurred during a dedicated Safer Festive Season Operation conducted by Mahikeng Visible Policing, Reservists, and the local Community Police Forum (CPF).

Late Friday night, on November 29, 2024, law enforcement officers were patrolling Station Road as part of their crime prevention duties when they encountered Zithembe Zondi, 27, and Sthembiso Zondi, 43, who acted suspiciously and attempted to flee upon noticing the police. Quick action by the officers led to their capture.

A subsequent search revealed a 9mm Glock pistol, loaded with five live ammunition rounds within one of their bags. Investigation immediately deepened as the firearm was found to be registered to one of two security officers recently murdered on November 17, near Danville, a neighborhood within Mahikeng. Additional searches at the suspects' residence further led to the discovery of six more rounds of ammunition and a holster.

Both suspects had prior work associations with the deceased security officers, adding layers of complexity to the case. Following these discoveries, the brothers were detained and appeared before the Molopo Regional Court on December 2, 2024. They were remanded in custody pending a follow-up court appearance scheduled for December 4, 2024.

Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, North West Provincial Commissioner, commended the effective teamwork and vigilance of all involved in the operation. He highlighted the importance of strong police-community relations and the critical role of the Reservists in community safety nets.

This arrest underscores ongoing efforts by South African police forces to tighten security during the festive season, a period often marked by increased criminal activity. It also reflects growing concerns over gun violence and illegal firearms within communities, pressing the need for continuous engagement and cooperative policing strategies.
