Sewer Rehabilitation Commences in Knysna's CBD to Address Infrastructure Collapse and Enhance Public Safety

The town of Knysna is currently undergoing crucial infrastructure developments as B&V Contractors spearhead an emergency sewer rehabilitation project in the central business district. This initiative, highlighted by Acting Municipal Manager Setloane Malepeng, addresses the urgent repair needs due to two catastrophic sewer manhole collapses located at key intersections within the town.

The onset of the damage, primarily triggered by groundwater infiltration and the eventual erosion of foundational materials, has created severe sinkholes, notably at the intersections of Long and Union Streets and Mortimer and Trotter Streets. These sinkholes have not only endangered road safety by disrupting the regular traffic flow but also posed a significant risk to both infrastructure stability and public safety in the bustling area of the town.

Key components of the rehabilitation include the replacement of the old sewer manholes, installation of new uPVC gravity mains along Gordon and Union Streets, and implementation of advanced deep shoring and continuous dewatering techniques. These measures are crucial to ensure the structural stability of the ground and to prevent future collapses. Post-stabilization of the sewer system, road layers, and asphalt surfaces will be reconstructed to normalcy, restoring fluid traffic movement throughout the district.

A particularly meticulous aspect of this project revolves around stringent safety measures. The contractor has deployed comprehensive strategies such as hoarding, barricading, and maintaining round-the-clock security to safeguard residents and facilitate seamless operation throughout the rehabilitation period.

With regards to traffic management, extensive preparations are underway to mitigate inconveniences. Starting November 25, 2024, through the end of February 2025, multiple lane closures are expected. Significant areas of impact include portions of Gordon Street leading into Long Street towards Main Road, primarily affecting drop-offs at the Knysna Primary School front gate, which will function as a single lane. These adjustments aim to accommodate both the safety of pedestrians and the practical needs of commuters in the vicinity.
