A significant development emerged in the ongoing investigation of a cash-in-transit heist that took place in Heilbron, Free State, as the Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit apprehended a third suspect. The 42-year-old was caught during an identity parade in Zamdela on Wednesday, 20 November 2024, for a separate case when vigilant SAPS members recognized him from circulated pictures.

The arrest marks a crucial step forward in a case that began on 21 September 2024, at approximately 14:30, when four armed assailants disrupted a routine cash collection at a local liquor store. The criminals overpowered security personnel on-site, making off with a substantial, albeit undisclosed, sum and a firearm. The episode concluded with the suspects escaping in a VW Polo and a BMW, triggering an immediate response from law enforcement agencies.

The matter subsequently came under the lens of the Hawks, eliciting a province-wide manhunt. The latest arrest came about as the suspect attended an unrelated police lineup—ironically, a moment that led to his downfall. SAPS members at the scene acted promptly upon spotting him, highlighting the benefits of inter-departmental cooperation. The Hawks quickly arrived at the location to confirm the suspect’s identity.

Prior arrests include Sthembiso Wiseman Buthelezi and Fihlokwakhe Mdakane, both apprehended in Johannesburg on 17 October 2024. The trio, now connected to this audacious heist, will face the legal proceedings together, scheduled for a hearing at the Heilbron Magistrates Court on Monday, 25 November 2024.

This case underscores the relentless pursuit of justice by South African law enforcement, particularly the Hawks, and serves as a stern warning to criminals engaged in similar activities. The continued effort to bolster security around cash-in-transit operations remains a top priority, aiming to deter future incidents in a country grappling with high rates of organized crime.

The community awaits further developments as the case progresses, hoping for a swift and just resolution to a crime that has shaken the local sense of security in Heilbron.
