Teen Hero Saves Three Amidst Tragic Drowning Incident at Pennington Beach

In a remarkable display of bravery and quick thinking, 16-year-old Keegan Lowe turned from an ordinary beachgoer into a lifesaving hero at Pennington Beach, located on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. The incident occurred at approximately 13:15 on Wednesday, 20 November, when a group of local teenagers found themselves caught in perilous rip currents while swimming.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Rocky Bay duty crew was activated following emergency calls from an eyewitness. The NSRI’s Emergency Operations Centre coordinated a broad response involving multiple rescue teams, including Umdoni lifeguards, IPSS Medical Rescue, local security officers, and SA Police Services’ K9 Search and Rescue.

Upon arrival at the scene, it was discovered that four teenagers were struggling against the strong currents. Without hesitation, Keegan, who was at the beach with friends and family, sprang into action. Wearing only one bodyboarding fin, he first rescued two boys who were closer to shore by bringing them back to the beach.

Demonstrating immense courage, Keegan then grabbed a rescue torpedo buoy stationed nearby and re-entered the treacherous waters to aid the others. He successfully rescued a third teen but was unable to locate the fourth, despite his valiant efforts.

The three rescued teenagers were assessed by paramedics on the beach and found to be unharmed. Unfortunately, the search for the fourth teenager continues, with conditions hampered by strong northeastern winds and rough seas. The local community, alongside professional rescuers, remains involved in the ongoing search.

Keegan’s heroic actions have been widely praised, with NSRI officials and community members commending his quick response and bravery. His selfless act not only saved the lives of three individuals but also served as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by rip currents.
