Hitchhiking Horror: Siblings Robbed at Gunpoint, Suspects Arrested After High-Speed Chase

In a startling incident on the N11 highway near Loskop Dam, Mpumalanga, a routine hitchhiking journey morphed into a nightmare when two siblings were robbed by the very individuals who offered them a lift. The suspects, identified as Keletso Masihla, 32, Tebogo Mailula, 34, and Dumisani Mohlala, 36, were arrested after a dramatic high-speed chase facilitated by an alert passerby and the swift response of the Middleburg police.

The distressing event unfolded on Saturday, 16 November 2024, as the siblings, whose identities remain confidential, accepted a ride from Grobblersdal towards Middelburg. Approaching Loskop Dam, the situation took a grave turn when one of the suspects demanded all their possessions. In a desperate bid to escape, one sibling jumped out of the moving vehicle and sustained minor injuries, a move that momentarily distracted the assailants.

Capitalizing on the confusion, an observant motorist stopped to assist the siblings, igniting a high-speed pursuit of the fleeing suspects while contacting police assistance. The police promptly intercepted the suspects' vehicle, arresting all three culprits who were found with the stolen items.

The trio appeared before the Middleburg Magistrate's Court, where they were denied bail pending their next court appearance set for 25 November 2024. Facing charges of common robbery, their capture has provided a temporary relief to the community but also a stark reminder of the risks associated with hitchhiking.

Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, seized this incident to reiterate the dangers of hitchhiking. With a stern warning, he highlighted past incidents where hitchhikers and motorists alike fell victim to severe crimes, including robbery, murder, and hijacking. "We urge the public to avoid hitchhiking especially during this high-movement season when criminals are likely to exploit vulnerabilities," stated General Mkhwanazi.
