Two Arrested in Western Cape for Illegal Firearms and Ammunition Possession

In a determined move to stem the unchecked spread of illegal firearms threatening community safety, Western Cape police have successfully apprehended two suspects. These arrests underscore a broader regional effort to combat gun violence and illicit weapons possession.

On the morning of Sunday, November 17, 2024, officers from the Philippi East South African Police Service (SAPS) made their first arrest. As they approached the local police station, their attention was drawn to a suspiciously parked taxi near the intersection of Luzuko Drive and Goven Mbeki Road. Upon investigating, they searched a 50-year-old man discovered with a Webley Mark revolver loaded with five rounds of ammunition. This individual was immediately taken into custody, and the firearm and ammunition were seized.

Simultaneously, another significant breakthrough occurred with the Anti-Gang Unit's proactive efforts in Worcester. Following up on intelligence regarding a hidden firearm, the unit pinpointed a shack in Roodewal. Their search yielded a loaded P1 Walther pistol accompanied by 68 9mm rounds of ammunition. The operation culminated in the arrest of an adult male found in illegal possession of these items.

Both apprehended individuals are slated for court appearances. They are expected to face charges at the Athlone and Worcester Magistrate's Courts, respectively, each accused of violating firearm and ammunition possession laws.
