Captured: Suspects Detained for the Assassination of Mark Lifman

The Western Cape's law enforcement landscape was shaken by news that two suspects were apprehended over the weekend, linked to the brazen assassination of controversial figure Mark Lifman. Lifman, 57, was fatally targeted outside the Garden Route Mall, a grim waypoint in his tumultuous life marred with legal battles and alleged criminal ties.

Western Cape police's spokesperson, Colonel Andre’ Traut, narrated the swift sequence of events following the crime, detailing how the police, supported by law enforcement, security companies, and vigilant crime watch groups, issued an immediate dragnet for the suspects. Crucially, their collaborative efforts yielded the arrest of the two men, aged 37 and 53, in a location near Uniondale. Their vehicle, possibly used in the hit, has been seized as part of the police inquiry.

Describing the police operation, Traut emphasized the importance of community policing and collaboration among various security role players in capturing those who evade the law. The apprehended suspects, whose names have yet to be disclosed, are slated for a court appearance at the George Magistrate’s Court on a Tuesday. Lifman himself was not unfamiliar with the courtroom. He and others, including the security company boss Andre Naude and alleged gang leader Jerome 'Donkie' Booysen, faced serious accusations ranging from murder and attempted murder to money laundering and the orchestration of gang-related activities. These charges involve, among other crimes, the murder of Brian Wainstein, who met a violent end in his home in 2017, pointing to a longstanding and deadly fight for control over the lucrative nightclub security sector.
