In a significant crackdown on illicit trade, a well-coordinated operation in North West, South Africa, has resulted in the arrest of two individuals caught with counterfeit cigarettes worth over half a million rand. On Wednesday, 30 October 2024, a Chinese national and his accomplice were apprehended by a team consisting of the Zeerust K9 Unit, Ottoshoop's Visible Policing division, Customs Officials, and the Mahikeng units of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) and Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC).
This Crime Intelligence-driven operation was set into motion with actionable information about the dealing in illicit cigarette trading. The suspects, identified as Huan Chen, a 37-year-old Chinese businessman, and Tshepo Lehokwa, a 22-year-old local resident, were caught transporting illegal goods in a white Mercedes Benz Sprinter. The pair were nabbed on the R49 road between Mahikeng and Ottoshoop near a bridge during daylight hours.
A search of the vehicle conducted under the capable hands of these law enforcement units revealed 40 cases of Remington Gold cigarettes. The value of the seized goods is estimated at R560,000.00. Upon failing to provide a lawful explanation for the possession of such a large volume of cigarettes, Chen and Lehokwa were immediately placed under arrest.
The subsequent court proceedings began on Friday, 1 November 2024, at the Mmabatho Magistrates’ Court where both men faced charges related to possession of counterfeit cigarettes. The case saw a brief postponement, with an initial bail set at R15,000.00 for Chen and R500.00 for Lehokwa. Their next court appearance is scheduled for Monday, 4 November 2024, where the judicial process will continue.
The rapid and decisive action by the combined forces received commendation from the Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena. His acknowledgement highlighted the effective collaboration and excellence in teamwork which brought about this successful intervention against a seemingly relentless tide of illicit cigarette trading that affects the country’s economy and public health.
Crime intelligence and joint operations continue to play a vital role in the identification and interception of criminal activities. The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious actions which could indicate illegal dealings, thus supporting law enforcement efforts in maintaining law and order in South African communities.
This operation is part of an ongoing effort by South African authorities to clamp down on illegal trade, ensuring safety and economic stability within the nation.
