The serene landscapes of the Eastern Cape were shattered by violence as mam’ uNogcinile Mtirara, a senior traditional leader and distinguished member of former President Nelson Mandela's extended family, was brutally killed in her home. Aged 71, Mtirara, who is the granddaughter-in-law of AbaThembu king Jongintaba Mtirara, fell victim to masked assailants on the evening of October 29, 2024, in Mqhekezweni village near Mthatha.

Lieutenant-Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, police spokesperson, verified the tragic incident, stating that the murder took place at the Mqhekezweni Great Place, situated in Bityi administrative area, which is steeped in historical significance due to Mandela's heritage. The attack did not end there. In a harrowing secondary incident, five final-year students of Jongintaba Secondary School, all in their early twenties, were subjected to sexual assault.

MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Zolile Williams, expressed deep shock and called for an unrelenting pursuit of the culprits by law enforcement agencies. Williams emphasized the unprecedented level of violence burgeoning in the province, highlighting its impact on the institution of traditional leadership that is foundational to the identity and governance of the region. His vow reflected the determination to combat a wave of crimes that seems to be surging to alarming levels.

In a promise to the community, Lieutenant-General Nomthetheleli Mene, the provincial police commissioner, stressed that the police force is putting in tireless efforts to capture those responsible for the dual atrocities. The investigative teams, including provincial detectives for the Serious and Violent Crimes unit and the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses Investigations unit, are fully mobilized. With the aid of SAPS forensic experts, they are committed to delivering justice.

The grim situation is exacerbated by a recent string of sexual violence against young girls, which MEC Williams denounced as intolerable, signaling a need for systemic and immediate action across the province.

This cruel act against a respected traditional figure and the assault on the young learners has sent ripples of horror and grief throughout the nation, with citizens and officials alike demanding swift justice and reinforcing the need for increased security and protection for traditional leaders and vulnerable communities.
