In a concerted effort to battle the scourge of wildlife crime in South Africa, rangers within the Tsitsikamma Section of the Garden Route National Park executed an impactful strike against abalone poachers. On Sunday, October 13, 2024, during a routine patrol catalyzed by a tip from Southern Cape Operation Phakisa, a successful anti-poaching operation led to the detention of ten suspects.

The patrol aimed at monitoring Forest Hall Road outwitted a group of individuals engaged in illicit activities. The operation intensified when a suspicious vehicle was spotted by the rangers. Upon the rangers' approach, the suspects attempted to flee, leaving behind tangible evidence of their crimes in the form of two bags filled with abalone.

Following their standard procedure, the rangers swiftly called the South African Police Service (SAPS), which quickly responded to the scene. A meticulous search of the area culminated in the capture of ten individuals, while an additional suspect eluded the authorities. In total, the operation resulted in the confiscation of 315 units of abalone, which collectively weighed 48.16 kilograms, carrying an estimated black-market value of R89,998.17.

The incident marks a significant milestone, following a similar arrest conducted in April 2024, moving the needle further in the authorities' relentless commitment to protect South Africa's marine life. The ten apprehended suspects are now under official detention by the SAPS.

This latest operation exemplifies the power of collaboration between various stakeholders committed to conservation. Commendations poured in from SANParks for the rangers, Southern Cape Operation Phakisa, SAPS, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) in Knysna and Mossel Bay, the Crime Prevention Unit, Plett Security, and all affiliates involved.

The arrests serve as a robust deterrent to potential poachers and showcase the ongoing resolve to combat wildlife crime. Ensuring the preservation of marine resources is essential to maintain ecological balance, promote sustainable livelihoods, and secure the benefits of our natural heritage for future generations.

This operation stands not just as a triumph against poaching but also as a reminder of the shared responsibility between conservationists, law enforcement, and communities to uphold and protect the diversity and richness of South Africa's marine ecosystems.
