South African Woman Arrested for Drug Trafficking at OR Tambo International Airport

In a significant bust, a 21-year-old South African national has been taken into custody at OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) for her involvement in drug trafficking. The young woman's arrest on Sunday hailed as a triumph for the ongoing joint operations conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and South African Revenue Service (SARS) Customs.

The arrest marks the eleventh incident of its kind at ORTIA within the last two months, highlighting the crackdown on narcotics smuggling through one of Africa's busiest air travel hubs. The collaborative law enforcement effort has been commended by the National Commissioner of SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, who has praised the dedicated work of both SAPS and SARS agents in tightening security at national entry points.

Arrested upon her arrival on a flight from São Paulo, Brazil, the profiled drug mule was soon subjected to an X-ray examination at a local hospital. The imaging confirmed the presence of foreign objects within her body, presumed to be capsules containing illicit drugs—commonly known as "drug bullets.” As she remains under police watch, the extraction of these drug packets continues, and authorities are supervising the safe and complete retrieval of the substances.

General Masemola has stressed the importance of the collective effort to combat drug trafficking, recognizing the diligent efforts of the nation's uniformed services personnel. He emphasized the heightened pressure drug traffickers are under and lauded that "there is nowhere to hide" for criminals involved in such illegal activities.

Two other recent arrests underscore the elevated vigilance at ORTIA. On 22 September 2024, a 30-year-old Namibian woman was taken into custody upon arrival from São Paulo with over 60 drug bullets expelled during a medical examination. She has since appeared in Kempton Park Magistrates Court on charges of dealing in drugs. Additionally, a Nigerian man was arrested on 13 September for smuggling cocaine concealed inside aircraft headphones, also inbound from São Paulo, with his case likewise proceeding through the legal system.

These ongoing seizures and arrests serve as a deterrent to those considering carrying drugs and highlight the effectiveness of profiling and intelligence-led operations. The reinforced security measures and inter-agency cooperation have played a crucial role in intercepting these couriers before they can distribute such substances within the country.
