An attempted assassination on City of Cape Town (CoCT) Manager Lungelo Mbandazayo was successfully prevented by the swift action of the Maitland Flying Squad this past weekend, highlighting the pervasive threat of organized crime in the city's administration.

Mbandazayo, at the forefront of a significant anti-corruption crusade within the municipality, led an investigation into irregularities involving businesses transacting with the CoCT, particularly after the death of official Wendy Kloppers. Kloppers's death occurred at the Symphony Way Housing Project site, which Mbandazayo linked to the City's defiance against gangsters seeking employment opportunities from contractors.

Amidst the investigation, numerous companies linked to Nicole Johnson, the spouse of the alleged 28s gang leader Ralph Stanfield, were placed on a blacklist by the municipality, indicating a no-tolerance stance against the infiltration of criminal elements within CoCT contracts.

The City's determination to rid its operations of corruption has drawn the ire of criminal syndicates, according to JP Smith, CoCT Mayco member for security and safety. These groups, whose operations risk being diminished by such investigations, view Mbandazayo's success as a direct threat capable of setting a precedent for other local authorities to emulate.

In a testament to the heightened security risks faced due to his pivotal role, Mbandazayo reportedly moves with a heavy security detail, including motorbikes, SUVs, and law enforcement officers, while donning protective gear such as a bulletproof vest and having armed security carrying rifles.

Tensions peaked on Friday night when police intercepted a suspicious VW Polo T-Cross and a Mercedes Benz close to Mbandazayo’s residence in Table View. The individuals detained by the officers were allegedly connected to a potential 'gang retaliation attack', a situation exacerbated by a recent shooting involving one of the apprehended suspects.

During this operation, the police confiscated an AK-47 rifle with ammunition as well as an Uzi semi-automatic gun, weapons indicative of the severe level of threat posed against public officials challenging the status quo.

The interference of organized crime in public affairs, particularly within the realms of infrastructure and housing projects, is a serious concern for Cape Town's governance. The city continues to grapple with gangs who exert their influence over community projects, sometimes resulting in deadly outcomes for those who stand in opposition.

This recent incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers elected and appointed officials face when combating systemic corruption and organized crime. It underscores the importance of robust security measures and the vigilant actions of law enforcement agencies like the Maitland Flying Squad to protect those serving in the public interest, ensuring the integrity and safety of municipal operations.
