The Western Cape has marked a significant victory in the fight against counterfeit trade, wrapping up a weeklong, inter-provincial operation on the picturesque Garden Route, with a haul comprising counterfeit goods exceeding the value of one million Rand. In a collaborative effort stretching across four provinces, law enforcement agencies have delivered a formidable response to the spread of illicit merchandise that continues to challenge the local economies.

Beginning on the 16th of September 2024, operatives including the local Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Policing Team, Public Order Police, and other crime combatting units, launched a series of raids beginning in George. At a Hibernia Street establishment, officers seized a variety of counterfeit household products and tech accessories estimated at R95,000. The operation resulted in the detention of three undocumented individuals, whose presence and activities on the premises were found to be unlawful.

As the operation extended into the following day, teams converged on central business areas across Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, where their efforts yielded counterfeit goods valued at approximately R510,000. Arrests continued with the apprehension of three Pakistani nationals, who were found to be in contravention of the Immigration Act.

The scope of the operation further encompassed towns such as Oudtshoorn and Mossel Bay, with the collective seizures for the week culminating in the confiscation of over 5000 counterfeit items. The success of these raids has not only disrupted the distribution networks of counterfeit goods but also highlighted the commitment of police forces and strategic partners engaged in dismantling these illicit operations.

Following these busts, the perpetrators arrested during the blitz will see their day in court, facing charges related to their involvement in the counterfeit goods trade. Western Cape police management has extended their commendations to all those involved in the operation for their unwavering dedication to the protection of legitimate trade and provincial economic health. This crackdown forms a part of ongoing initiatives to combat and eliminate counterfeit trading within the region, ensuring the integrity of the market and safety of consumers.
