In a move poised to elevate the Oudtshoorn Airport to new heights, the Oudtshoorn Municipality has embarked on a strategic partnership with the Test Flying Academy of South Africa (TFASA). The newly signed 9 years & 11 months Service Level Agreement, commenced on a note of optimism on Wednesday, 04 September 2024. This partnership germinated from an open and transparent tender process, reflecting a commitment to fairness and due diligence.

Under this agreement, TFASA has been vested with the significant responsibility of operating and managing the airport facilities. However, the Municipality retains its foundational role as the owner and license holder of the airport. The municipal manager, Mr Walter Hendricks, and TFASA's Mr Jean Rossouw formally endorsed the agreement, signaling the start of a collaborative tenure.

A major requirement of the contract is TFASA's development of a comprehensive airfield master plan, which will pave the way for a systematic future growth blueprint. TFASA is also tasked with crafting a strategic business and marketing plan, setting the stage for harnessing the airport's full economic potential. An Aerodrome Operations Manual will be another critical output from TFASA, likely highlighting the operational standards and safety protocols essential to the airport's daily functions.

The agreement stipulates the creation of a Steering Committee, a multi-representational entity including members from both TFASA and the Municipality. This governance body will ensure adherence to tender specifications and supervise the airport's operational trajectory. Regular meetings by the Committee will be instrumental in maintaining the airport's efficient management.

TFASA's domain will now encompass several pivotal administrative roles ranging from processing new applications for hangars to orchestrating further developmental initiatives on the airfield. They are also entrusted with the direction of air traffic services, managing fuel supply chains, administering landing fees, and chalking out future expansion plans for the airport.

The core intent behind this collaboration is to bolster the airport's safety and security credentials. Furthermore, the agreement aims to lay a robust foundation for the airport’s long-term sustainability and operational excellence. In the bigger picture, the Oudtshoorn Airport is being positioned as an economic powerhouse capable of drawing both direct and indirect investments to the area, thus propelling the town’s growth and prosperity.
