Garden Route District Municipality's senior firefighter, Emile Conrad, is set to fly the South African flag at the upcoming World Firefighter Games in Aalborg, Denmark, from September 7 – 14, 2024. The bi-annual event will witness about 3,000 firefighters from across the globe, competing in 40 diverse sports to strengthen bonds and uphold the spirit of camaraderie.
Founded in 1990, the World Firefighter Games have become a significant international gathering, bringing together those who are always first on the scene in the face of danger, not only to compete but also to celebrate their dedication and bravery. The event works towards fostering international friendship and understanding among firefighters, along with providing them an opportunity to share techniques and experiences.
Emile Conrad made his way onto the South African team by clinching the South African National TFA championship in Mossel Bay and his remarkable performance in Lisbon during the 2022 Games, where he ranked 10th overall and achieved 2nd place in his age category. His participation in the “Toughest Firefighter Alive” contest, a highlight of the Games, will see him challenge his limits and vie for the top spot against some of the world's most resilient firefighters.
Conrad's achievements have not only made his district proud but also shone a spotlight on the excellent standards of South African firefighters. With the support of the GRDM Council and Management, and the blessings of the Executive Mayor Alderman Stroebel, Conrad departs from George with high hopes and the anticipation to exceed his own previous accomplishments.
Emile represents not just the Garden Route District Municipality but an entire nation that stands behind him as he competes on the global stage. His commitment to fitness, conditioning, and mental fortitude exemplify the rigorous standards required in the firefighting profession.
The community celebrates Conrad's journey as he departs on September 4, 2024, bearing the ambition and will to showcase the skill and strength of South African firefighters to the world. Conrad is scheduled to return on September 17, 2024, hopefully with stories of success and a renewed spirit of international friendship.
