Minister Malatsi Takes Decisive Action Against Postbank Fraud, Engages Hawks for Justice

In a bold move to uphold financial integrity, Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Hon Solly Malatsi has handed over a comprehensive forensic report detailing systemic governance and financial breaches at the government-run Postbank to the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation, the Hawks. The KPMG report unveiled misappropriation of funds amounting to R89,5 million between 2021 - 2022, creating an uproar in the political and public domain.

The issue was highlighted during a recent session with the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Communications and Digital Technologies led by Deputy Minister, Mondli Gungubele, on 03 September 2024. The meeting laid bare the deep-rooted issues plaguing the Postbank, which primarily services some of the nation’s most vulnerable groups, including social grant beneficiaries.

These findings from KPMG corroborate the distressing insights earlier presented by the Auditor General of South Africa (AGSA) in her 2021 report. She had outlined fraudulent maneuvers involving cash theft, thereby corroborating the gravity of the situation that called for a meticulous investigation. In turn, numerous instances of these illicit transactions had been reported to the police, setting the wheels of justice in motion.

The Ministry underscored the gravity of the situation by instructing the Postbank Board to adopt and implement all recommendations manifested in the forensic report. The resolve to address these fraudulent practices head-on resonates with Minister Malatsi’s sentiment – the law will be used to its full extent to fight any individuals attempting to exploit citizens.

“We will not tolerate this level of corruption, especially when it affects ordinary South Africans and the most vulnerable among us. It falls upon us to take decisive action against those who breach the ethics and responsibilities of their roles within public entities,” stated Minister Malatsi, reiterating his commitment to ethical governance.
