The Hawks, South Africa's elite Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, have made a substantial dent in the illegal drug trade with the exposure of a large-scale hydroponic cannabis operation in Port Alfred, Eastern Cape. The operation, which marks a significant win against organized crime in the province, was brought to light by collaborative efforts between various law enforcement divisions.
Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya praised the investigative team for their exhaustive efforts in addressing high-level criminal activities in the Eastern Cape. The collaborative mission comprised members from the Gqeberha based Serious Organised Crime Investigation South African Nacotics Enforcement Bureau (SANEB) unit, Operational Response Services Gqeberha and East London, Visible Policing Unit Port Alfred, Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), and Criminal Intelligence Management Analysis Centre (CIMAC).
Authorities executed a search warrant on a property along Mooiplaas Quarry Road, leading to the discovery of a sophisticated laboratory for growing hydroponic cannabis. The setup ensured the cultivation of the plants under optimal controlled conditions. The team also uncovered various cannabis-based products, including dried cannabis and CBD oils, reportedly packed and prepared for distribution.
During this raid, five suspects, ranging from ages 22 to 36, were arrested. The group comprised three undocumented foreign nationals and two South African males. This prompt and decisive action has been lauded for both the strategic apprehension of the suspects and the disruption of their illegal activities.
Moreover, the expertise of specialists from the National Forensic Science Laboratory was sought to meticulously process the scene, collecting evidence to reinforce the case against the suspects. The gathered exhibits are set to play a critical role in the judicial process.
The accused individuals will face charges in the Port Alfred Magistrate’s Court, with their appearance scheduled for 2 September 2024. They will answer to charges related to violations of the Immigration Act, Drug Trafficking Act, and dealing in Narcotics Medicine Act.
Major General Ngwenya heralded the Hawks' systematic investigative methods, crediting their determined pursuit of organized crime networks with the day's success. He emphasized the steadfast resolve of the team to root out criminality and maintain the safety and security of communities in the Eastern Cape.
