In an unprecedented show of force against criminal activities, Limpopo's South African Police Service (SAPS) has successfully executed a large-scale operation leading to the apprehension of 434 suspects. This police action, a part of the national 'Operation Basadi', was conducted over several districts in the province with the backing of both female and male law enforcement personnel.

The operation, launched at the start of August 2024, was orchestrated under the adept leadership of the Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe. The five districts that fell under the operation's scope include Capricorn, Vhembe, Sekhukhune, Mopani, and Waterberg.

Focused on reinforcing the state's authority and the rule of law, 'Operation Basadi' specifically targeted crime hotspots known for illegal activities ranging from cross-border crimes and drug trafficking to sexual offences. The deployment of a combination of law enforcement tactics such as roadblocks, heightened visibility patrols, tracing of wanted criminals, and liquor outlet raids, was integral to the operation's strategy.

Highlighting the operation's success, police forces managed to seize a considerable cache of illegal guns and bullets, narcotics, booze, and stolen goods. The operation's profound impact was further evidenced by the arrest of over 310 suspects in a single overnight blitz conducted on August 27, 2024. Notably, a significant number of these arrests involved undocumented individuals and those wanted for serious crimes such as murder, attempted murder, assault, robberies, drug trafficking, and offenses related to gender-based violence.

The operation also saw the enforcement of numerous road traffic regulations, with a widespread issuance of related fines. In her commitment to reducing crime levels, Lt Gen Hadebe placed considerable emphasis on crime intelligence-driven operations, community engagement, rapid response to service calls, the recovery of illegal firearms, the elimination of drug circulation within communities, and the tracking of wanted individuals.

The operation would not have been as successful without the coordinated efforts of several stakeholders. These include the Head of Traffic in the Department of Transport, Mrs Jane Mulaudzi, various government departments, other law enforcement agencies, community crime prevention groups, and private security firms. Together, their contributions have played a vital role in fostering safer communities.

In her address, Lt Gen Hadebe expressed her gratitude to all those involved in the operation and encouraged SAPS members to further strengthen community relations, a fundamental aspect of the ongoing fight against crime in the region.
