In a sweeping move against crime in the Northern Cape, Operation Shanela, conducted by the Provincial Task Team in conjunction with local law enforcement, has brought a wave of arrests and confiscations in Upington and its peripheries. On the 24th of August, 2024, Lt Col Colin Qunta spearheaded the operation resulting in impactful gains against local criminal activities within the ZF Mgcawu District.
The task force’s diligent efforts led to the tracing and apprehension of two individuals implicated in an assault case involving grievous bodily harm. The operation's success continued as officers swarmed the Paballelo area, executing search and seizure initiatives. These strategic searches led to the arrest of nine individuals charged with the dealing of narcotics, possession of goods suspected to be stolen, and the identification of an undocumented foreign national.
In a significant haul, police officers seized 90 tablets of the drug Mandrax, with an estimated street value of R9,000, along with a sum of cash believed to be the proceeds of the illicit drug trade. All confiscated items were processed for further probe into the fabric of criminal networks.
The scope of the operation also extended to responding to a domestic violence complaint, which culminated in the discovery of a former law enforcement official with unlicensed ammunition valued at R11,230. It’s been reported that he is now facing charges of domestic violence in addition to possession of unlicensed live ammunition.
Throughout the operation, a total of 13 suspects fell into the hands of justice. The message from the Northern Cape police authorities is unequivocal: actions to shrink the operational realm for criminal elements will continue without cessation. The commitment to upholding public safety and order in the area remains undeterred, with efforts to eliminate illegal activities being of the highest priority.
This crackdown is a testament to the resolve of the Northern Cape law enforcement agencies to disrupt and dismantle criminal operations, with Operation Shanela casting a broad and unyielding net over crime in the district.
