In a dramatic turn of events, the Limpopo Provincial Flying Squad successfully curbed a significant illicit cigarette operation on the R519 road towards Zebediela. On Friday, 23 August 2024, the Flying Squad engaged in a high-speed chase that led to the capture of three suspects and the seizure of goods valued at over R1 million. The chase ensued when one of the vehicles, a black Jeep originating from Polokwane and full of illicit cigarettes, disregarded orders to stop.

The refusal to comply resulted in a collision with a truck, which led to the Jeep overturning. The driver of the Jeep, identified as a foreign national, succumbed to their injuries at the scene, marking a stark reminder of the dangers posed by high-speed pursuits. The truck driver and the passenger fortunately survived the crash but required medical attention at a nearby hospital.

Simultaneously, the Flying Squad’s determination led them to intercept two other vehicles: a Toyota Rav 4 and a white Ford Ranger, each carrying a South African and two foreign national suspects. These individuals were promptly arrested and taken into custody. Meanwhile, the search operation uncovered two more vehicles – a white Mercedes Benz and a charcoal Ford Ranger – at Bergenek village in Westenburg's policing area. These vehicles too were laden with illicit cigarettes, but the additional suspects managed to escape.

All five vehicles, regardless of their condition post-chase, were confiscated by the Limpopo police. This incident has resulted in the opening of cases related to culpable homicide and the possession and transportation of illicit goods. Despite the unfortunate loss of life, the identity of the deceased suspect remains undisclosed as investigations continue.

The three captured individuals, between 38 to 47 years of age, are facing the consequences of their actions with an initial court appearance at Magatle Magistrate's Court scheduled for Monday, 26 August 2024.

Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has lauded the diligent efforts of the police officers involved. Their unwavering dedication not only led to the recovery of the illegally transported cigarettes but also the apprehension of the suspects. Hadebe reasserted the Limpopo Police's resolve to combat cross-border and organized crimes, highlighting the importance of disrupting illicit trading networks that threaten both the economy and safety of communities.
