Eastern Cape Unveils Dedicated Hotline to Tackle Extortion

In response to worrying trends of extortion in the Eastern Cape, with the city of Mthatha highlighted as the central hub, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has introduced a new measure to combat the growing criminal phenomenon of "protection fees." Last Friday, in a significant move to bolster public confidence and expand reporting mechanisms against organized crime, the Eastern Cape SAPS inaugurated an Extortion Hotline, designed to function round-the-clock to assist citizens plagued by extortion.

The Heavy Hand of Extortion

Extortion, often manifesting as the demand for so-called "protection fees," has cast a shadow over the business community and residents in the area. These criminal practices have been prolific in social media discussions but have seen a worrying gap in being formally reported to the police.

Eastern Cape's Proactive Strike Against Crime

The hotline was officially launched in a ceremony at the Mthatha SAPS Academy by Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, the Eastern Cape's Provincial Commissioner. In her appeal to the community, Lt Gen Mene highlighted the critical role of the hotline in bridging the reporting divide. “The public’s participation is essential. Without their reports, such crimes persist unfettered,” she stated.

Reporting for Action, Not Just Information

The hotline, which is not an emergency nor a replacement of existing SAPS communication channels, has one distinct purpose: to facilitate reports of extortion within the province, allowing citizens to contribute anonymously if they choose. Mene underscored its pivotal role as a resource in a province where the gap between actual criminal incidents and their formal reporting rates was widening.

Investigative Clout at the Fore

The oversight of investigations into reported extortion cases has been assigned to the Provincial Organised Crime Unit. This unit, renowned for its forensic expertise and investigative experience, offers reassurances that reported cases will receive attention befitting the severity of the crime.

Tangible Results Bolstering Confidence

Parallel to the hotline's launch, Lt Gen Mene disclosed that the police's focused efforts have led to significant inroads against extortion rings. As of now, 27 individuals have been detained across 11 separate cases. Notably, many have connections to multiple incidents. Their court cases are ongoing, with bail denied in each instance, which is testament to the seriousness with which these crimes are being handled.

The Eastern Cape SAPS's plea to its residents is clear: the newly established hotline is a conduit for change.
