The Free State community was plunged into mourning as news of a devastating traffic accident on the R707 spread throughout the region. The collision, which occurred on the night of August 23, 2024, resulted in the tragic deaths of five individuals, casting a grim shadow over the weekend.

The scene of the accident, nestled between the towns of Marquard and Senekal, became a display of twisted metal and shattered glass as emergency services rushed to the site, following reports received at around 9:56 pm. Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring, the provincial police spokesperson, confirmed the harrowing details of the event.

An investigation promptly commenced to understand the moments leading up to the collision, involving a black BMW with Lesotho license plates and a white KIA with Gauteng plates, each steered by a male driver. The KIA also carried three female passengers. In the business of the night, the serene Free State roads served as an unlikely backdrop to the tragedy that transpired. The five people, including all occupants from both vehicles, were confirmed deceased at the scene.

As the news reverberated across the country, the authorities issued a poignant plea to the public, calling for assistance in locating the next-of-kin for the deceased. The Marquard police have made lines open for any leads that could guide them towards family members of the victims. In particular, Warrant Officer Chaotsane of the Marquard Station has been designated the point of contact for such information.

The investigation, currently focusing on a case of culpable homicide, will painstakingly piece together evidence to unveil the causative factors of the accident. The law enforcement's handling of the situation sheds light on the strict road regulations and vigilance sought to prevent such tragedies.

In a brief mention, officials also reported the separate adjudication of a case involving Sekhonola Seatile, an armed robber apprehended and recently sentenced, which helped wrap up another crime affecting the community. However, the gravity of the road collision took precedence, leaving an indelible mark on the township and stoking conversations about road safety in the region.

In this time of loss, the community draws together to support those in mourning and to reflect on the fragility of life, especially on the road, where every moment counts and caution is imperative. The police force of the Free State stands resolute in their investigation, resolved to find answers and provide solace through the course of justice.
