The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Eastern Cape has taken a decisive step to combat the escalating extortion problem in Mthatha by establishing an Extortion Hotline. This measure seeks to address the growing concerns within the community over “protection fees” – unwarranted charges that have been threatening the existence of local businesses and disrupting everyday life of residents.
Over recent years, the spate of extortion cases within the province has become a notable public safety issue. In particular, the Mthatha region has observed a disturbing pattern of forceful shut-downs of businesses, as well as the hijacking of cargo trucks and courier vehicles that do not comply with these illegal demands. Educational institutions in Mthatha West have similarly been impacted, prompting serious intervention from provincial and national authorities.
According to the SAPS Provincial Commissioner, Lt General Nomthetheleli Mene, the number of reported extortion cases has markedly increased over the last three financial years. While there were six cases recorded for the 2021-2022 period, and four for the 2022-2023 period, the number jumped to 14 for the 2023-2024 period thus far. Discounting the possibility of significant underreporting, these figures underscore the urgent need for more effective reporting mechanisms.
The Extortion Hotline, operating on a 24/7 basis, is expected to bridge the gap between public perception and the actual rates of extortion in the region. It offers various means of communication, including WhatsApp, voice notes, and direct calls to allow individuals to confidentially report incidents, using the dedicated number: 082 387 1561.
In her address, Lt General Mene implored the Mthatha community to engage actively with this new solution and emphasized the confidentiality and constant availability of the hotline. Moreover, she revealed ongoing efforts to assure the integrity of law enforcement, including the vetting of police officials suspected of collusion with criminals.
As part of the broad strategy to stamp out extortion activities, the SAPS is also planning a strategic deployment of police units across the O R Tambo region. This move reinforces the hotline initiative, showcasing the commitment to restoring order and safeguarding the economic stability and welfare of the citizens in the Eastern Cape.
