From workplace management to personal assistants and even romantic connections, AI is embracing multifaceted responsibilities with increasing approval from the South African public, according to a recent Kaspersky survey.

The study, titled "Excitement, Superstition and Great Insecurity – How Global Consumers Engage with the Digital World," pinpoints the growing trust in AI's impartiality, with 42% of South Africans supportive of the idea that AI could be a fairer boss than a human. This staggering statistic reflects the country's readiness to welcome AI into leadership roles within corporate and institutional settings.

Innovations like ChatGPT have demonstrated tremendous public engagement, attracting 153 million visits in its inaugural month and reaching a peak of 2 billion visits by April 2024, indicating a potent fascination with conversational AI's capabilities.

The educational sphere is no stranger to the AI revolution. The survey indicates that a substantial 68% of South Africans expect children's education to be augmented by virtual experiences and Metaverse environments in the near future, marking a decisive shift away from traditional learning methodologies.

AI's entrenchment in daily life is palpable, with 64% of the nation recognizing AI as an inseparable aspect of existence. The sentiment is largely optimistic, with more than half the populace (52%) enthusiastic about AI ushering in a new era of progress. This optimism extends to creative endeavors, with 53% considering AI capable of producing genuine works of art.

AI has also emerged as a trusted companion for managing routine tasks efficiently—60% of South Africans expressed eagerness to employ AI for improving daily life organization. The digital realm of interaction and companionship is also evolving, as 56% of people are open to engaging with AI chatbots for online conversations, and a bold 33% would consider AI for finding romantic partners on dating apps. Concerns exist that human relationships might be redefined, with 63% apprehensive about the implications of virtual characters potentially replacing real-life interactions.

Kaspersky expert Vladislav Tushkanov weighs in on these trends, acknowledging the soaring adoption rates and multifaceted use of AI, extending beyond data handling to intimate corners of personal life. However, he acknowledges that "with great power comes great responsibility," and the advance of AI is not exempt from risks such as overreliance, AI-generated fraud, and privacy threats.
