Western Cape Police Seize Illicit Firearms in Crime Crackdown

In a substantial effort to ensure public safety and clamp down on illicit firearms, the Western Cape police have successfully confiscated three unlicensed firearms during targeted operations in the Central Karoo and Garden Route districts. Satori News Agency has learned that the first incident unfolded on Sunday, 18 August 2024, when members of the Central Karoo Flying Squad acted on precise intelligence regarding an unlicensed firearm in Beaufort West. Officers, who raided a house on Vygie Street around 18:40, discovered a firearm with ammunition concealed in the ceiling. A 7,65 Norinco pistol, along with seven rounds of ammunition, was seized as evidence. A 50-year-old woman present in the household was apprehended and is currently facing charges of unlawful firearm and ammunition possession.

Two days earlier, in a separate incident, Knysna police officers responded to a domestic violence dispute. The complaint, originating from Dolphin Avenue, Brenton on Lake, led officials to unearth two additional firearms and a cache of 109 rounds of ammunition. The 66-year-old resident of the property, failing to produce a valid license for the arms, was then taken into custody on similar charges of unlawful possession.

Both suspects are to remain in custody, awaiting their appearance in court, where they will be formally charged. The court proceedings will aim to deliver justice and reinforce the message that handling firearms without a legal permit will not be tolerated.
