Mossel Bay, Western Cape, has seen a significant tightening of law enforcement as the operation named 'Basadi', a part of the Women’s Month activities, has successfully led to the apprehension of two wanted individuals with a criminal history of violent offenses. Stepping up the efforts to increase safety and security in the area, the operation kicked off on 15 August 2024 with a series of stringent measures aimed at tracing suspects, conducting roadblocks, setting up vehicular checkpoints, and ramping up patrols in crime hotbeds.
The adept investigators from Da Gamaskop and Kwanonqaba Detectives in Mossel Bay held a joint tracing operation and were able to capture a 28-year-old male, charged with offenses including robbery with a firearm, theft, and murder, which dated back to 2020. Another male aged 25 was also detained for crimes such as assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm (GBH), possession of purportedly stolen goods, and robbery, with these infringements reportedly having occurred in 2022.
With both suspects now remanded in custody, they awaited their court appearance scheduled for Monday, 19 August 2024, at the Mossel Bay Magistrates' Court. The charges against them reflect the gravity of their offenses and depict the tireless endeavors of the police force in safeguarding the community against violent acts.
The commendable work of Operation Basadi has not just ended with these arrests. Progress permeates through the district, with a total of 20 additional suspects nabbed for crimes committed recently in the Garden Route District. These suspects will face the legal system once their charges are finalized.
In an effort to assure road safety, the operation's synergy with traffic and law enforcement authorities resulted in a noteworthy outcome: the issuance of 45 fines worth R55,360 for various traffic-related offenses during vehicular checkpoints and roadblocks. A minibus taxi was also seized in George. Enhancing the operation's impact, a concerted drive to increase awareness around gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) saw the distribution of informational pamphlets to educate and engage with the public.
The success of the operation received accolades from the Garden Route District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, who particularly praised the contribution of female officers within the force. It is a stepping stone towards creating a safer environment, particularly for women, and exemplifies the dedication and effectiveness of the South African Police Service (SAPS).
