Gqeberha once again becomes the centerpiece of a relentless crusade against illegal activities as local law enforcement bodies, in a carefully orchestrated operation, delivered a significant blow to drug syndicates and counterfeit operations. On the 16th of August, 2024, a multi-agency task force, under the guidance of the Provincial Organised Crime Investigations, suppressed the supply chain of illicit drugs and counterfeit goods in Central, Gqeberha.
In an operation that ran from 08:00 to 17:00, various dedicated units within the South African Police Service (SAPS) including DPCI, Anti-Gang-Unit, Public Order Police, Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit, Motherwell Tactical Response Team (TRT), along with partners such as Customs and Metro Police, combed the nerve centers of the local black markets. The team, operating with precision, executed numerous search warrants which unfolded drama in the Central area of the city.
A pivotal moment was the arrest of two individuals of foreign nationality aged 35 and 46, following the discovery of an assortment of narcotic substances in their possession. These substances included packets of cocaine, tik, and various tablets such as Boss and Mandrax—ingredients of street nightmares. The pair faces drug possession and illegal immigration charges.
The sweep continued to ransack hideouts of illegal activities, where the law enforcers unearthed a startling collection of drugs amounting to an approximate street value exceeding R1 million. This cache included significant quantities of Dagga, Cat Cocaine, Mandrax, and tik alongside drug paraphernalia; no arrests have been made for these items as they were found abandoned.
Additionally, the unit tackled illegal electrical connections, disconnecting three residences and businesses, and the Department of Health seized expired products from local shops.
The Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Major General Vuyisile Ncata, hailed the operation a success and reiterated the unwavering commitment of the law enforcement agencies. Major General Ncatha's remarks encapsulated the essence of the collaborative action,
"The seizure of counterfeit goods and removal of drugs from our streets contributes to the overall reduction of crime in our policing precincts. We remain steadfast in our mission to uphold the law and keep our communities safe," he stated.
The bold enforcement against illegal enterprises not only undermines their operations but also sends a positive message to the residents: safety and security are paramount priorities. The multidimensional crackdown, harmonized across various units, champions the cause for a safer Gqeberha and serves as a beacon of hope in the ongoing battle against crime.
